Coming out of high school, everyone about Israel "Izzy" Martinez. The Illinois native was all-world coming out of West Aurora and seemed to have the talent to be a can't-miss Division I All-American.

Things didn't go as planned. After Martinez captured an NJCAA championship at North Idaho, he was set to wrestle for Iowa, but his career never panned out as off the mat issues shrouded his career.

Fast forward to 2015 and Martinez is finishing up his fifth year as the head coach at Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, Illinois. He's been on the bench for 10 years and was recently announced as the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Scholastic Coach of the Year.

That's a long turnaround since his rowdy days as a college-aged athlete. Martinez talks candidly about how he recovered from his mistakes and how he's been able to turn the page on his wrestling pedigree and harness it into his love for coaching kids.

On Episode 170 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we dig deep into the mind of Izzy Style Wrestling, find out what it's like to be a high school coach and the Tony Ramos-Izzy Martinez relationship.

Kyle Klingman is quietly one of the busiest men in wrestling. Lurking behind the scenes as much as he can, Klingman is the Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dan Gable Museum, which sits in Waterloo, Iowa.

The Gable Museum has a big weekend coming up with the Glen Brand Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Dan Gable Celebrity Golf Tournament in Waverly the weekend of May 30.

Klingman also breaks down some things that the Gable Museum does that's unique to the world of wrestling, like its professional wrestling wing.

Then we'll have a wrestling-centric discussion that covers international wrestling and other things Kyle and Jason have been known to discuss.

Some of the other topics discussed are

  • Danny Hodge, Gerry Brisco and Jim Ross
  • How the relationship works between the wrestling museums
  • Crossover between amateur and professional wrestling
  • Some bad Kurt Angle movies
  • Kyle asks is international wrestling going back to its old ways?
  • Jason explains a few things that have changed with what used to be FILA
  • The ball draw was the dumbest rule in the history of sports
  • World Championships are in Vegas, Woot!
  • Where was Rocky IV's training scene filmed?

Episode 168 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast goes to the NAIA where Jimmy May is being called upon again to start a new program in the state of Kansas.

May spent over 30 years as a high school coach in Nevada and then he retired. Then he called some friends who enticed him to apply for a new coaching position at Baker University. Well, May accepted and launched the new NAIA program. Then he stepped away from wrestling, but then got called back into it. He's now been tabbed as the new head coach at the brand new program at Kansas Wesleyan.

For May, it's familiar territory -- Kansas and a new NAIA program. But on Short Time, we learn about what drew May to the Midwest and we talk about his days wrestling with Gary Mayabb, Mike Hagerty and others at Central Missouri and the role of smaller programs when it comes to putting the next generation of coaches and teachers into the ranks.

Big time fun on Episode 167 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast with Georgia's own Cliff Fretwell. Before we talk with Fretwell, we throw some stats at you regarding the NCAA Division I All-Americans and how they did in Fargo. Our newest patron, Troy Heinritz, gets a shout out as well. You can find Troy's podcast, The Blacklist Exposed, at theblacklistexposed.com.

Want to be a contributor to the program? Check the links out below where it says "Contribute." Also join our free DAILY WRESTLING NEWS email list at mattalkonline.com/news. Once the shout outs and news plugs are done, we get to the interview portion of the show.

Fretwell is one of the more recognizable voices in wrestling with his notable "Ropewell" previews on both YouTube and Flowrestling, but he's been an active coach and organizer in Georgia for the past decade. Fretwell has taken his wrestling club, Compound, into a clothing and team gear company and has relationships with some of the top names in the sport.

Fretwell's boom with Compound Clothing really came when they leapt forward with the Keep Olympic Wrestling gear. With that, a clothing company was born.

Fretwell's group is also launching a College Combine in June where college coaches will have the opportunity to see college hopefuls practice, compete and go through a number of tests similar to an NFL-type of combine.

We talk grits, sweet tea and the South on Short Time.

Find more about Compound at CMPClothing.com, CMPtrained.com, CMPteamwear.com, and CMPcamps.com.

Wrestling brings us some great stories and often times those stories get overlooked by the bigger schools and bigger programs.

In Division III this year, there as an incredible story of the bonds that wrestling brings. It was between RIT's Brad Mayville and Messiah's Chris Williamson. This story is being told by RIT assistant coach Jason Bovenzi, who himself was a three-time Division III All-American and two-time champion.

Rather than give you all the details here in the show notes, we'll just have you listen to the show.

On Episode 164 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll have a chat with Brooks Wheelan, a stand-up comic and an alum of Saturday Night Live.

Brooks' brother Brett is a coach in Iowa and Brooks grew up competing in the sport and still loves it to this day. I'll talk with Brooks about his time in Iowa, growing up battling guys like Charlie Falck, Mack Reiter, Ryan Morningstar, and Moza Fay.

We'll share some interesting stories from his podcast with Jay Mohr and a potentially bad armdrag as well as his album, This is cool, right? Wheelan also takes exception to the host not enjoying the Nickelodeon show Rugrats.

Follow Brooks on Twitter @brookswheelan and check out his tour dates at brookswheelan.com. You can also purchase his album on iTunes by clicking here.

The U.S. Open is set for May 7-9 in Las Vegas and like clockwork, there's some new rules we have to get acquainted with.

U.S. Wrestling Officials Association President Rick Tucci becomes the first guest to make multiple appearances on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast as Tucci will explain the new Greco-Roman rules passed on April 30 by United World Wrestling.

This interview was initially conducted prior to that announcement and much of the discussion centers around how USA Wrestling was to implement the rules at the University level and below because United World Wrestling wasn't going to implement them with the Senior level athletes until a later time.

Then that changed. We made sense (in some ways) of all of it and Tucci will tell us his thoughts and the rationale behind the changes on Episode 163 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast.
