With the 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands set to kick off on December 29, Episode 232 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Denny McCabe, one of the original champions from the first event back in 1963.

McCabe won what was then known as the Western Suburban YMCA Open in La Grange, Ill., at 190 pounds. One of four champions from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale), it ended up being the highlight of his collegiate career as injuries kept him from postseason competition.
McCabe, who still remains active in the wrestling discussions to this day as "Denny" on TheMat.com forums, goes back in time to talk about the Chicagoland wrestling scene back then and how cool it was to have a holiday event so close for home.

McCabe also breaks down his international career in the Armed Forces and working with his college teammate, World and Olympic Team member Larry Kristoff.

With the Olympics coming up, there's also a special deal going on from Rocket Languages, one of the fastest ways to learn a foreign language. With the Olympics in Rio, it's a perfect time to get your Portuguese on to prepare. Or maybe you want to go the Spanish route, or the even more mysterious Russian.

Just in time for Christmas, Episode 231 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast brings the return of Chael Sonnen. The always verbose Sonnen had an itch to talk about the U.S. Nationals and a couple of topics in wrestling and we're going to scratch it, just in time to hit the egg nog.

An All-American at Oregon and an MMA fighter and now TV and podcast personality covering combat sports, Sonnen is still a giant wrestling fan and helps spread the word of the sport on his show, You're Welcome, available at podcastone.com.

We'll talk about some of the performances in Vegas, the marketing of women's wrestling and some thoughts about Mark Schultz's latest appearance on Chael's show.

With the Olympics coming up, there's also a special deal going on from Rocket Languages, one of the fastest ways to learn a foreign language. The dual meet season leads to a lot of results where A beats B, B beats C, C beats D and D beats A. That's really nothing new in wrestling, but on Episode 230 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Lehigh head wrestling coach Pat Santoro as the Mountain Hawks are fresh off a 30-7 win over No. 8 Oklahoma in Norman.

Coach Santoro is in his eighth year as the head coach at Lehigh. He explains his journey to Lehigh, which was "home" despite wrestling collegiately at Pittsburgh. Santoro explains the tradition of Lehigh wrestling and what this year's team has to do to be in a position to bring home a team trophy come March.

We'll also briefly touch on the passing of Iowa high school wrestlers Austin Roberts. The Spencer H.S. wrestle collapsed at a weekend tournament and passed away shortly thereafter. For information on how you can help the family, check out the GoFundMe.com page here.

We go back north of the border and visit with Canadian heavyweight Korey Jarvis on Episode 228 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. Yes, our obsession with our wrestling neighbors to the north continues with Jarvis' story in trying to find time to chase his Olympic dream.

A native of Elliot Lake, Ontario (we had to look it up, too), Jarvis explained his rocky wrestling road to the Univesity of Guelph and then his time as a welder. Yes, Jarvis is a welder by trade and balances work, training and a family, all while finding various ways to financially support the dream.

Jarvis breaks down his typical week and compares and contrasts how his life is in relation to his American contemporaries.

Can you believe Nahshon Garrett wasn't even going to head to college? No, he wasn't planning on not wrestling, he didn't really have plans to go to college at all. On Episode 227 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Garrett talks about his development in wrestling and what ultimately led him to believe he could perform in Division I wrestling.

A native of Chico, Calif., Garrett keeps a pretty even kiel and balances wrestling with time off the mat helping out at church. He's now up at 133 pounds and is loving the sport again after essentially hating every second of it last season as the cut down to 125 started to take its toll.

Garrett breaks down how fun coach Rob Koll can be, what it was like watching Kyle Dake on his journey to college wrestling greatness and simply, how to treat people.

He also talks a little bit about that win over returning NCAA champion Cody Brewer.

Yeah, we weren't going to leave that out.

We head North of the Border for Episode 226 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast where we'll chat with Vang Ioannides and Tamara Medwidsky about the Canadian Wrestling Team Trials that were held in Strathcona County in Alberta.

Having never covered a true Canadian wrestling event, this was on my wrestling bucket list and the staff and Wrestling Canada Lutte were great in their hospitality and giving me some access I wasn't expecting upon my arrival into Alberta.

Ioannides is the Associate AD at the University of Alberta while Medwidsky is the Executive Director of Wrestling Canada Lutte and both answer some questions we in the states might have about how they do things "up there."

Tremendous performances all around and big thanks to Andy Ross from the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association and 49Northwrestling.com for all his help and knowledge from the event.

Episode 225 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Tommy Rowlands, a four-time All-American at Ohio State University and a 2007 U.S. World Teamer in men's freestyle.

Rowlands has been doing various things in and around wrestling since he got out of coaching, but his two most recent happenings involve the new wrestling apparel company, The Rudis, and his new podcast with 2008 Olympian and current OneFC champion Ben Askren.

The podcast, the T-Row and Funky Show (Subscribe on iTunes) gives an athlete's take on the topics in wrestling and while it's only three episodes in, will also interview people on those topics as well.

Rowlands is also a partner in The Rudis, the apparel line that's featured the Dave Schultz t-shirts that have become prevalent around the wrestling community.

Rowlands will also look back at one of the more painful moments in his career, the injury default that sent him to sixth place at the 2003 NCAA Division I Championships and he'll discuss his rivalry with Steve Mocco.

We also take some time at the beginning of the show to remember the late Allen Brown, one of the main sources of info at WrestlingReport.com. Allen was a good friend and his passing is a real loss for the wrestling community.

Dec 1, 2015

Episode 224 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast ventures outside of wrestling to identify how a small, grassroots organization has blossomed to over 400 member leagues in 18 countries. That organization is the Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

Yes, it's roller derby.

Why on earth would anyone try to compare the non-P.C. world of women's roller derby to college an international wrestling? It's simple -- they get fans. Earlier this month, I went down to St. Paul and checked out the WFTDA International Championships at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium. This place is no stranger to wrestling, having previously hosted World Team Trials in Greco-Roman.

Roller derby, even with its rough-around-the-edges skaters, has been a steady draw around the country. In 2009, I attended a bout between the Minnesota Roller Girls and a team from North Carolina. Four thousand people attended. A day later, the University of Minnesota hosted a home dual. Roller derby outdrew the Gophers. If you go to cities where college wrestling has a presence, I don't doubt you'll find derby leagues close that do better in attendance than college wrestling programs, and all without the benefit of athletic department backing.

Mia Culprit and Mary Lou Wretched (no, not their real names) offer some insight from a governing body perspective and a league perspective. Mia Culprit works for the WFTDA, while Mary Lou Wretched works on the marketing arm in Kansas City.

What can we learn from roller derby? Let's find out.

Episode 222 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast heads on the road, about 45 minutes east of the Twin Cities for a dual between the Air Force Academy and Division III UW-La Crosse. Why is this noteworthy? We've got some familial battles ongoing with the Malecek family.

Air Force won the dual 29-3, but for Air Force heavyweight Marcus Malecek, it was an opportunity to wrestle in his high school gym and compete in a dual against his uncle Dave, the head coach of UW-La Crosse.

We'll talk with Marcus, Dave and Dennis Malecek and Air Force head coach Sam Barber about the experience.

Wrestling fans who follow the world of mixed martial arts should know the name Charlie Brenneman. Known as "The Spaniard," Brenneman had a number of fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championships and has also held titles in various regional promotions.

On Episode 221 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Brenneman will talk about his new book, Driven: My Unlikely Journey from Classroom to Cage and break down the reasons behind he got into fighting and the reasons why he felt his story was compelling enough to write a book about it.

American novelist John Irving has penned 14 books.

Two of his most famous are The Cider House Rules and The World According to Garp. In 1996, Irving wrote a memoir called The Imaginary Girlfriend, which outlines much of his wrestling and writing career as well as his foray into coaching and officiating.

On Episode 220 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Irving recalls his time growing up wrestling in New England, at the University of Pittsburgh and well after his career in college ended. Irving is currently on tour speaking about his new book Avenue of Mysteries, which is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

I got an opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with Irving over breakfast to talk about the roles wrestling has played in his life, his inclusion in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American and how wrestling makes its way into his writing. It's a great opportunity to hear from one of our great advocates.

One of the most amazing spectacles in college wrestling history came and went in front of an NCAA-record 42,287 fans at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City as No. 4 Iowa knocked off No. 1 Oklahoma State 18-16 on Saturday, November 14.

On Episode 219 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast captures some sounds from Kinnick as well as the post-match press conferences with Tom Brands and John Smith. We'll also get some comments from Iowa 125-pounder Thomas Gilman and then get some insight on the development of the event from Iowa Director of Wrestling Operations Luke Eustice.

The Grapple on the Gridiron is set to have some great fall weather in Iowa on November 14. We've talked with Tom Brands, now we'll get the other perspective from Oklahoma State head coach John Smith on Episode 218 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast.

Coach Smith, who's seen and done just about everything there is to do in wrestling, jumped at the chance to wrestle Iowa in an outdoor dual at Kinnick Stadium. Smith breaks down the process from his side of things and we get his take on how he's preparing the Cowboy wrestling program for this historic dual.

Coach Smith also goes over some of the lineup questions concerning the recent open results at 133 and 157 pounds and whether or not he'll pull the trigger and send Kaid Brock and Joe Smith into the lineup.

With Joe, a freshman and the coach's son, competing and potentially being in a position to be the best guy at the weight, coach Smith talks about what it's finally like to be coaching his own son in the Cowboy wrestling room.

We'll also revisit the discussion on Smith's side of the relationship with Tom Brands and also find out how good Alex Dieringer is compared to some of the great all-time Cowboys.

Are you pumped for this?!

The Grapple on the Gridiron is coming to Kinnick Stadium on November 14 in Iowa City. On Episode 217 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Iowa coach Tom Brands talks about how excited he is for this dual and what his team has to do to prepare.

Brands, fresh off Iowa's media day last Thursday, also talks about the goals for this team this season and the keys to replacing a guy like Bobby Telford at heavyweight and what it will take for Nathan Burak to reach the top of the podium.

Brands will also explain what the mentality is for past Hawkeyes Tony Ramos and Brent Metcalf to get ready to try to make the 2016 Olympic team.
Brands also discusses his long relationship with Oklahoma State head coach John Smith and how the two have been able to co-exist, even when playing basketball. Yes, basketball.

Oct 23, 2015

Episode 213 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast heads back to North Carolina where Dave Barker and Sara Koenig of the Super 32 Challenge will break down this year's event and talk about the growth from last year to this year.

Last year's episode featuring the pair, available here, is the most downloaded episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. They're going to try to break their record.

With nearly 2,400 entries over three divisions and the high school division nearing 1,600, the Super 32 went from being a small booster-run club tournament back in 1999 to the nation's absolute best preseason wrestling tournament. This thing is straight up massive and awesome in terms of competition.

SIDE RANT: It's also come to my attention that the Atlanta Journal Constitution, one of the largest papers in the country and one of the biggest in the Southeast, won't be covering the NWCA All-Star Classic because the paper focuses on things that get page views. Well, here's your chance to help out coverage in the state that's seen college teams pop up with men's and women's programs. E-mail Sports Editor Ray.Cox@ajc.com and respectfully present why the AJC should cover this event and why it's important to the Georgia community AND to their readers. This is especially for those of you living within the AJC coverage area or those who have read the newspaper in the past. My pleas are now going unanswered, so now it's your turn to help move the needle and show the AJC that college wrestling, a unique event like this coming to Georgia, is WORTH their time and the minimal cost it takes to cover the event.

My time with Dan Wirnsberger dates back to his days as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Now entering his 11th year as the head coach at Bucknell, coach Wirnsberger visits the Short Time Wrestling Podcast for Episode 212.

He'll talk about the new renovations going on that will directly impact the wrestling program at the Lewisburg, Pa., campus and how his donors and administration have embraced wrestling since it was resurrected 11 years ago after a brief cut of the program.

Wirnsberger talks about his evolution as a coach and what it's like to recruit at an academically competitive school within the rugged EIWA.

It's an interview you won't want to miss on Short Time!

With little success historically, Andy Lausier knew what he was getting into when he took over the Sacred Heart wrestling program four years ago.

On Episode 211 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Lausier about his post at Sacred Heart and the plans he and assistant Derek Moore have on October 22-24 when the two will run 60 miles to Madison Square Garden as a fundraiser for the program.

A Division III All-American at Lycoming, Lausier is one of two head wrestling coaches in Division I who were Division III athletes. He'll break down his rise through the coaching ranks and how supportive the administration has been, including Athletic Director Bobby Valentine, a former Major League Baseball player and manager.

You can donate to the Sacred Heart #MarchtoMSG by clicking here.

Note: We talk about the University of Oregon battle based on comments from this story from The Oregonian.

Chattanooga head wrestling coach Heath Eslinger always has some interesting takes when it comes to the state of college wrestling. He's also got a penchant for putting himself through misery.

Don't believe me? On Episode 209 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I'll talk with coach Eslinger about his recent completion of the Chattanooga Ironman Triathlon and what on earth possessed him to even attempt such a feat. He'll also tell you what's tougher, a triathlon or wrestling. You might (or might not) be surprised about his answer.

Eslinger also has an interesting position when it comes to redshirting in college wrestling. Hear what he's got to say and give it some thought.
