Heading into the 2016-17 season, Cornell's Gabe Dean had already established himself as one of the nation's most dominating wrestlers. With 60 percent of his career victories via bonus coming into this season, Dean set his sights on a third NCAA championship, not necessarily the Dan Hodge Trophy.

On Episode 299 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Dean talks about why he's off to a punishing start, winning the first 13 official matches this season by bonus and that isn't counting his major decision over NCAA champion Myles Martin of Ohio State at the NWCA All-Star Classic.

Dean's path this year is set on destroying hopes and dreams of other 184-pound athletes, but if you ask him, he's just going out there to have fun.

We'll talk to Dean about his career goals, life after wrestling, life after international wrestling, what style he's considering and how he'd wrestle himself.

He also knocks our 10 questions out of the park. We're throwing away the timer.

When Fresno City College finished up the 2016 California Community College Championships this past weekend, they looked back and saw Cerritos College five points behind. Last month, Cerritos capped an unbeaten league season with a win over Fresno City for the state dual championship, but Fresno City and coach Paul Keysaw would ultimately prevail and win the school's 14th state title.

On Episode 298 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Keysaw, a 1991 NCAA champion at CSU Bakersfield, will talk about the run through the tournament, including a tournament-shifting 5-1 round in the semifinals that enabled the Rams to claim the team title in the closest race since Cerritos edged Fresno City by eight points in 2014.

It was Keysaw's sixth title at Fresno City and ninth overall. He won three titles at Moorpark prior to landing in Fresno.

We'll talk his roots, his battles with Randy Couture and what he loves about coaching.

On Episode 297 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Shane Sparks from the Big Ten Network and Trackwrestling comes on to talk about everything but wrestling.

Seriously, there's about five minutes of actual wrestling talk here, but we do touch on the Olympics, baseball, Tom Brady and some smelly things. A great talker and advocate for wrestling, Sparky gets a little wound up when talking about Vin Scully, too.

Chael Sonnen returns again to the Short Time Wrestling Podcast to give a mental mind meld of what he thinks is going to go down when Dan Henderson meets Jon Jones at Submission Underground 2 in Portland on December 11.

Submission Underground, founded by Sonnen and streamed live on FloGrappling, is basically MMA without the striking. The whole point is to make your opponent submit. Sonnen, host of a popular podcast on PodcastOne, will talk about the dynamic between the two fighters, how the situation with the match presented itself and what he expects.

We'll also talk turkey, literally, and chat about some things in Las Vegas, the Olympics and the world of Greco-Roman wrestling.

Short Time makes its first ever trip to Brookings, South Dakota as the No. 20 South Dakota State Jackrabbits hosted third-ranked Iowa at Frost Arena on Friday, December 2.

For South Dakota State, it was a chance to set a new attendance record -- and boy did they ever. The South Dakota faithful put 4,087 into Frost Arena although their boys in blue fell to the Hawkeyes 29-8.

The Iowa-South Dakota theme was consistent as Madison High School in South Dakota faced CL-GLR in a South Dakota vs. Iowa dual prior to the Jackrabbits and Hawkeyes. The angle there is SDSU two-time Division II champion Paul Konechne coaches at CL-GLR and his brother Marty coaches at Madison, about 40 minutes from Brookings. A war of words led to the matchup at the Division I championships and Coach Chris Bono got the brothers together to kick off afternoon with a back-and-forth dual.

We'll talk with the Konechne brothers, Tom Brands, Sam Brooks, Thomas Gilman, Chris Bono, Seth Gross and Nate Rotert on this Saturday Short Time.

Abdullah Abu-Mahfouz graduated from Central Dauphin East High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with some unfinished business. On Episode 294 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Abu-Mahfouz about how he's finishing that business with a wrestling documentary film called Stand Up.

Abu-Mahfouz follows his alma mater as a handful of wrestlers look to try to qualify for the Pennsylvania state tournament. In wrestling-rich District III, this isn't exactly an easy task, even for the district's most powerful programs.

We'll breakdown how fans can check out the film, how the idea to do a documentary got started and understand how wrestling provided a sense of friendship for a Muslim-American in wrestling-rich Pennsylvania.

For more information on the film, go to ReelNationMedia.com/standup and if you're interested in helping fund a theatrical release of the flim, head on over to SeedandSpark.com to find out how.

It's about time to head back to the Big Apple as the fifth annual Grapple at the Garden presented by Bats-Toi. Our guest on Episode 293 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast is Dylan Wanagiel, the Director of Sports Events and the Executive Producer of the Grapple at the Garden.

Wanagiel recaps the NCAA Championships that were held in Madison Square Garden back in March, the most recent "big deal" to hit MSG, which was UFC 205 as well as the synergy between events at The Garden.

It's a fun chat with one of the guys responsible for putting wrestling in the Big Apple and the World's Most Famous Arena.

My wife and two daughters came with me to Virginia and the Old Dominion-Missouri match on Sunday, November 13. For my wife Abby, it was the first time she had to haul both of our children around an arena while I worked. In this instance, I was announcing the alumni dual. We got home to Minnesota a day later and it was time.

What time was it? It was time for my wife Abby to appear on the program as an actual guest rather than as someone who simply laughs in the background when she's in the studio for a recording.

I'll quiz my wonderful wife about her wrestling knowledge and our family and how wrestling is part of our lives. It's a bit different than the normal episode.

For the past 14 years, Frank Popolizio has rocked the early part of the wrestling season with the Northeast Duals. Now, Popolizio's going to change things up and he'll talk about it on Episode 291 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast.

Instead of duals, Popolizio is going to change things up and go with a modified mini-tournament and modified round-robin for some of the top college teams on November 13 at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., for the Journeymen Asics Collegiate Classic.

No more dual scheduling nightmares, at least not for this year. Popolizio talks about the change, the challenge and the decision to go this route.

Chances are, when you read something historical about the sport of wrestling, Don Sayenga had a hand in it.

On Episode 290 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we merely scratch the surface with one of the sport's finest historians. A longtime contributor to Amateur Wrestling News and part of a Lehigh Valley cadre of wrestling mavens, Sayenga took his discovery and love for wrestling to a level few have achieved in the wrestling world.

At 82, Sayenga still speaks with reverence about his days competing, but more importantly to him, his days traveling the country and the world as a salesman researching and documenting the history of wrestling.

It's likely Sayenga has written over 1,000 articles and documents about wrestling. His most notable, The Oldest Sport, ran in AWN for decades. A two-time winner of the Bob Dellinger Award, Sayenga's talents in documentation and storytelling put him in rare company. He's got some great stories to tell.

From a personal standpoint, I could have talked to Sayenga for hours, but went with just one -- to start.

Sally Roberts has been there, done that.

On Episode 289 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Roberts, a two-time World bronze medalist, talks about her new non-profit organization, Wrestle Like A Girl, a group focused on growing females in sport and life.

A native of Washington, Roberts found wrestling as a way to keep herself out of trouble -- like real trouble. Wrestling prior to the world of Cadet and Junior Championships in Fargo and in an era where college wrestling for women was still in its infancy, wrestling led her to World Championships as well as a career in the Army's World Class Athlete Program.

Roberts explains what WLAG is about, who else is involved and how they are looking to empower girls all over the country and the world through wrestling and sports.

For more information on Wrestle Like A Girl, check out their website at WrestleLikeAGirl.org, on Twitter @wrstlelikeagirl or Facebook at Facebook.com/WrestleLikeAGirl.

Kerry Regner's been doing things a little differently in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. The head wrestling coach at Williams Baptist College didn't wrestle folkstyle in college, rather he went to Northern Michigan and worked in Greco-Roman.

On Thursday, October 20, Regner pushed his Greco roots a little deeper into the ground at NAIA Williams Baptist College as the school announced it was starting a Greco-Roman wrestling program. That's right. A school in just its third year of wrestling is going to create a separate competitive program in Greco-Roman wrestling.

On Episode 288 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Regner will talk about the genesis of the idea, which started in 2014 as a Regional Training Center concept and has morphed into the first college-sanctioned Greco-Roman wrestling program in America. Northern Michigan has been offering scholarships to compete in Greco-Roman, but the program hasn't competed under the guise of the athletic department.

Regner is overcome with options and directions. Now he just needs to hire a coach.

No, we're not jumping in with all these Canadian guests because we're threatening to move to Canada because of the upcoming election, we're talking about three-time Olympian Haislan Garcia, the newest member of the Arizona State coaching staff.

Garcia immigrated from Cuba in 2004 and quickly asserted himself as the wrestler to beat in Canada. In 2008, he was granted citizenship and made the first of his three Olympic teams. He'll talk about the opportunity to coach at the college level, his experience with folkstyle and some of the more intriguing things about poutine and Tim Horton's.

Ok, he'll say more than that.

Episode 286 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast features the first woman in American history to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling -- Helen Maroulis.

Even after winning gold in Rio over Japan juggernaut Saori Yoshida, Maroulis was back on the mat working with her coaches in California. Maroulis takes us through the busy media tours she's been on since making history in Rio in August. She'll talk about Cal Ripken Jr., The History Channel and even give her opinion on the singlet debate. Yup. We haven't gotten a woman's point of view on that one yet, have we?

Maroulis is always a fun interview and a true American hero.

College wrestling is up and kicking out in California. On Episode 285 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we venture out to Southern California to talk with Cerritos College head coach Don Garriott.

Cerritos is off to a hot start this season, winning a tournament title at the West Hills Invitational and running its early-season dual record to 8-0. Garriott, a two-time California placewinner in his day at El Camino College, has been at the helm of the Falcons program for the last 11 years. A Division II All-American at Chico State, his coaching stints have taken him to several junior colleges and high schools in Southern California.

Garriott talks about the level of competition in the wrestling league that competes in the fall, as well as coaching Tito Ortiz in college and putting wrestlers into four-year colleges after they finish up their two years at Cerritos.

Always informative when we talk California Community College wrestling.

Current UFC Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic was an Ohio state wrestling runner-up as a senior at Eastlake North High School in 2000. He still had something to prove. In 2003, Miocic qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships on what was a pretty good Cleveland State team. He missed out on placing. He still had something to prove.

On Episode 284 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast released on International Podcast Day, Miocic will talk about his rise to the top of the UFC, his passion for wrestling and baseball and how he's been able to train and win in the UFC all while serving as a paramedic and firefighter at two different stations in the Cleveland area.

Miocic explains how some nuances of baseball compliment MMA and how fighting and firefighting complement one another. Fun interview with a fascinating guy.

It's not uncommon for the Short Time Wrestling Podcast to head up to Canada and we'll do that again on Episode 282 and chat with Olympic women's freestyle champion Erica Wiebe.

A native of Stittsville, Ontario just outside of the nation's capital of Ottawa, Wiebe opted to give wrestling a go in college after discovering the sport in the ninth grade. Even prior to picking the University of Calgary to further her education, Wiebe had her eyes on competing in soccer and heading to the United States to compete on the collegiate pitch.

Wiebe, ranked second in the World heading into Rio, explains her back story and the turning points in her career that took her from her previous high placement of seventh at the World Championships to winning an Olympic gold in Rio.

Lou Rosselli was a busy man during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The coach of the Ohio Regional Training Center was tasked to coach Kyle Snyder and Team USA at Carioca Arena 2. All the while, Rosselli, an Olympian in 1996, was being courted by the University of Oklahoma.

Just days after Snyder won gold, becoming the youngest American wrestler to win an Olympic championship, Rosselli told the world he was going to be a Sooner. On Episode 281 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Rosselli about how short that time actually was between Snyder winning and accepting the position, what his opinions are about the state of the program, retention in Norman as well as what his goals are with the tradition that exists in the great wrestling state of Oklahoma.

Sacred Heart head wrestling coach Andy Lausier will make his second appearance on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast as he comes back with a crazy idea for Episode 280.

Last year, Lausier and assistant coach Derek Moore ran 60 miles from Fairfield, Conn., to New York City in the March to MSG as a fundraiser for SHU wrestling. This year, Lausier is getting a little nutty and he'll be Spinning 2 St. Louis, riding his bike through nine states and over 1,000 miles in one week to raise money for the program yet again. He'll also make sure his wrestlers are peddling along with him back at school every step of the way as they will be riding bikes during the entire trip with him.

Lausier took over the worst team in Division I four years ago. How is their progress and what does former Major League Baseball manager Bobby Valentine, the school's A.D., think of it?

It's a bit of a copycat episode for the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. Scratch that, it's COMPLETELY a copycat episode. A week or so ago on the T-Row & Funky Show, a wrestling podcast hosted by NCAA champions Ben Askren and Tommy Rowlands, the pair came up with their Top 10 college wrestlers of all-time.

That show got me, your humble (or not so humble) host thinking about my Top 10 list. I did some research, broke things down and then needed someone to keep me honest. I enlisted the feedback of Kyle Klingman of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum to help give me some resistance or some assurance on my list.

What came out of it? Let's find out on Episode 279!

1. Cael Sanderson
2. Yojiro Uetake
3. Dan Hodge
4. Dan Gable
5. Gray Simons
6. Kyle Dake
7. Pat Smith
8. Logan Stieber
9. Lincoln McIlravy
10. Stephen Abas or Lee Kemp

After a long layoff due to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Short Time Wrestling Podcast roars back with Episode 278 and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder.

At 20, Snyder became the youngest American wrestler to win an Olympic gold with his victory over Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan in the finals. Snyder went back-to-back winning a World championship in 2015. A rising junior at The Ohio State University, Snyder talks about his run to gold, his opponents, his family and his coaches and friends who helped him along the way. He also shares a story about drilling with fellow Olympic champion Helen Maroulis.

The Olympic Spirit is running strong through the Short Time Wrestling Podcast as we get ready for Rio with Episode 277. On today's show, we'll talk with USA Today Sports Columnist Nancy Armour (Twitter: @nrarmour) about some of the stories she'll be covering in Rio as well as some backstory on how some Olympic stories get mega press and others get overlooked.

Armour is a veteran journalist and an award-winning Olympic writer. Having covered 11 Olympic Games on both the winter and summer side of things, her insight and knowledge is one wrestling fans will want to take in. She knows why things move the needle and we could probably take a hint or two throughout the course of the episode.

Armour also hosts an Olympic-themed podcast called Going for Gold, which is available on iTunes (linked already) and on Soundcloud.

Back on track with the Short Time Wrestling Podcast with Episode 276. Today, we recap Fargo and talk with Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro. Our Fargo recap isn't in the normal wrestling way either. When the Bison Turf burned on Friday, July 22, it sent host Jason Bryant (yes, speaking in the third person) into a period of reflection.

What was it about such a college dive bar that was so cool? Well, it wasn't the bar itself, rather the wrestling people who populated it for eight glorious days every summer. It's got a special place and we'll explain why.

In a rare occasion to get a University President, Short Time talks with Castro about the future of Fresno State wrestling.
