The rise of women and girls in wrestling has been well-documented. From the first U.S. team sent to compete at the World Championships to Helen Maroulis' historic Olympic gold, the participation and acceptance continues to grow. On Episode 436 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Joan Fulp and Andrea Yamamoto, two members of USA Wrestling's Girls High School Development Committee. The goal of the committee is to work on sanctioning high school girls wrestling in every state.

There have been early adopters, like Hawaii and Texas, and there are states that had great participation, but it just took a while for the approval, like California. Fulp, the widow of Hall of Fame wrestler and coach Lee Allen and mother of women's wrestlers Katherine (Fulp-Allen) Shai and Sara (Fulp-Allen) Bahoura has been around the sport since a chance meeting at Central Michigan University with a one of the national team coaching staff.

Yamamoto (nee Carstens) was one of the early trailblazers in women's wrestling and coaches girls wrestling in Washington.

Episode 434 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast approaches the situation at Division II Truman State University in Missouri with its Athletic Director Jerry Wollmering.

On May 2, the school announced it was going to cut wrestling and men's tennis as a cost-cutting measure to help combat cuts in funding school-wide. We'll ask Wollmering why the coaches of the respective teams weren't given the opportunity first to raise funds, what any potential timeline looks like and how this decision impacts students in Missouri and its conference mates within the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Is TSU's cost-effective education to blame? Will there be a chance to reverse this decision? There's a lot of questions still yet to be answered, but here's where we start.

What started as a project for Black History Month a few years ago turned into something bigger for South Carolina high school wrestling coach Kevin Emily. On Episode 432 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we'll talk with Emily about his two books, Pathfinder and Pathfinder Vol. 2.

Emily, who coaches at Midland Valley High School in Graniteville, S.C., has spent a lifetime around wrestling. Prior to moving back to his family in South Carolina, Emily coached at storied West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. His first book chronicles some of the early journeys of African-American wrestlers in the sport of wrestling, going back to the first black NCAA championship qualifier, Harold Henson of San Diego State.

Throughout the show, Emily details stories and meanings behind why he turned his idea into a self-published book and then why he felt the need to push another volume out, creating what's more or less a Pathfinder series.

Emily wrestled collegiately at Chattanooga.

Check out the book and order your copies today at OptionalStart.org.
